Chapter 19

Having spent an abbreviated night's sleep reflecting on the events of the prior several days, Fletch awoke concerned about the overall situation. His first call was to Clint Evans at the CIA.

“Good morning, Fletch. Glad you called. I was wondering when you were going to ask for some additional back-up. I hear your Professor's running on a lousy track.”

Fletch listened. Waited patiently. Then he answered in a controlled, businesslike voice so he wouldn't sound flustered. “He is, and that's partly what I called about. But tell me Clint, how good are you at finding rats in internal machinery?”

“Probably a helluva lot better than you and your NSA guys, because we deal with much more crap than you do. But I think you'll find your rat as soon as you figure out how everybody seems to be latching onto your assignment so fast. I'd start looking into tech and comm first. In the meantime, you have to be needing some help in the field, because I think you're badly outnumbered. You and your organization haven't got anywhere near the kind of manpower you need for this cross-country shoot-a-thon you're on. We also think some of your problems may be coming from out of the country.”

“You're making some very wild guesses, but you're right-on-target, Clint. Sounds like you're getting ready to help whether we ask for it or not. And if I'm sounding like we don't need or want you up our asses and taking over, let me assure you….”

“No way, Jose. This is your personal can of worms. The Prez gave this one to you. We're only along for the ride. And don't worry about who's in charge, Fletch. You are. And you can count on me to keep it that way.”

Fletch relaxed. His buddy was doing his thinking for him, and offering him a badly needed lifeline. “Thanks, Clint. But I would like to get a few things straight. I don't really give a damn who's in charge anymore. I just want to keep this guy and his fiancee alive and well. I've seen some of the stuff he's putting out, and I think it's right on. They're also a nice couple of kids trying to do something worthwhile. The least we can do is make sure he gets it done in safety, and without running for his life for the rest of his life!”

“We're with you on that, Fletch. We've all read his Harvard bombshell and agree with most of it. Like lots of other folks here, I'd like to see the rest of what's gonna be in this 2050 Project.”

“Great. Then let's can the ‘who gets the credit or the blame’ shit and start working together.”

“Ready for you to hit the start button, Fletch. Tell me what you need, when and where.”

“Atlanta to Minneapolis tonight. They're leaving Pensacola at eight-fifty-five and catching a redeye to Minneapolis, out of Atlanta. I need someone at Hartsfield for the connection, and then at MSP International early tomorrow morning. They're meeting someone for breakfast, and then deciding where to go from there.
